The neon lights buzzed and the chime of slot machines filled the air, blending with the murmur of hopeful gamblers all around him. He could feel the rush—the kind of energy that only a casino can provide. He started slow, easing into a few hands at blackjack. The cards were kind to him, and before long, he had built up his stack to $3000. The intoxicating sound of chips clinking together fueled his ambition, and he began to think that tonight might be his night. He wandered over to the roulette table, the spinning wheel taunting him. He dropped a few hundred on black, then a couple more on odd numbers. With each spin, his heart raced faster. Luck was on his side. By midnight, Brettski's pile of chips had swelled to an impressive $5000. He was on fire. His confidence was a blaze, and the stakes kept getting higher. "One more roll of the dice," he muttered to himself as he sat down at the craps table. This time, it was all or nothing. The dice flew through the air, the tension palpable. The dealer called out the number—five—and Brettski's pulse quickened. His hand hovered over his chips, the largest bet of his life ready to be placed. And then, just as the dice landed, the power went out across the casino. A hush fell over the crowd. Brettski's heart stopped. Was it a sign, or had he just missed his chance?
