Built in the late 1980s, it was constructed at a time when tourism to Las Vegas was crashing and the town was still hungover on the Rat Pack days. Its tropical theme and thousands of rooms ushered in a new generation of hospitality and the Mirage and its volcano forever changed the status quo in Las Vegas. MGM later acquired the property and dealt with the loss of the Siegfried and Roy show, ushering in the "Love" Beatles show by Cirque De Solei. Then they spiraled the property into a Wall Street gamble and the property wound up bunched in a realty trust. MGM was also the manager of the hotel and decided that they wanted to focus on newer venues.
